About this pujo

The Sabarna Roy Choudhury family's Aatchala puja at Barisha — widely regarded as the oldest Durga Puja in Kolkata, predating the city itself.

This is one of Kolkata's bonedi bari (aristocratic household) Durga Pujas — celebrated privately inside a family thakurdalan rather than a public pandal. Visitors are welcome during the puja days; dress conservatively and ask permission before photographing family members. It's flagged on Dugga Elo as a featured pick. A typical visit takes about 30–45 min.

Planning your visit

Durga Puja 2026 runs from Maha Shashthi (Oct 16) through Vijaya Dashami (Oct 21). Bonedi bari pujas follow their own ritual timings — early morning or late afternoon is usually best to avoid crowds. Check the helpline numbers before you head out.
